La Leche League @ LLTC

August 1-7, 2012, marks the 20th annual World Breastfeeding Week -- an awareness-raising campaign advocated by the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, the International Baby Food Action Network, the International Lactation Consultant AssociationLa Leche League InternationalUNICEF (the United Nations Children's Fund), Wellstart International, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action, the World Health Organization -- to draw attention to the importance of breastfeeding for infant health and nutrition. This year's theme is Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative.

As of July, Leech Lake Tribal College has begun holding La Leche League meetings on campus to share information about and to support mothers breastfeeding their children. The meetings are held on the last Friday of each month, from 3-4 p.m., in the student lounge of Giizhiikaandag Wigamig (Cedar Hall) and are led by LLTC distance education coordinator Melanie Wilson. The next meeting is scheduled for Friday, August 31, at 3:00 p.m. in Giizhiikaandag Wigamig's student lounge.
